Our mission

Gaia Education promotes a holistic approach to education for sustainable development by developing curricula for sustainable community design. While drawing upon best practices within ecovillages and transition settings worldwide, Gaia Education works in partnership with universities, ecovillages, government and non-government agencies and the United Nations.

The 2013/2014 Gaia Education Design for Sustainability (GEDS) online programmes are now open for registration!

Drawing on the experience and expertise developed in a network of some of the most successful ecovillages and transition settings around the globe, GEDS programmes are based on the four core dimensions of Gaia Education’s Design Curriculum: the social, worldview, ecological and economic dimensions of sustainability.

Designers

Gaia Education programmes equip students of all ages with the practical skills and analytical depth to design a society which uses energy and materials with greater efficiency, distributes wealth fairly and strives to eliminate the concept of waste.

Students become sustainability designers and change agents taking active roles in transitioning their existing communities, institutions and neighbourhoods, to more sustainable patterns of production and consumption, as well as leading more joyful, meaningful and healthier lives.

Gaia Education’s flagship curriculum, the EDE, integrates the social, worldview, ecological and economic dimensions of sustainability, providing an education which is universal in scope and local in application. Gaia Education programmes have been offered in settings ranging from tribal and traditional communities to intentional ecovillages, from urban slum to universities and training centers.

The UN DESD 2005-2014, is a global effort to raise public awareness of and wider participation in Education for Sustainable Development.
